The Chicago-style deep-dish pizza was created by a relocated Texan named Ike Sewell. He settled in Chicago and opened Pizzeria Uno in 1943, before pizza was a favorite meal among Americans. Now Sewell’s creation has come back to his Texas roots and has taken its place as a top fare for Houstonians.
Chicagoans have brought to Houston the authentic taste of this specialty pizza. In 1976 they opened Star Pizza at 2111 Norfolk Street. This family-owned restaurant opened in 1983 and has built up a following in the area. Their deep-dish pizzas are a favorite, like their Meatza pizza, a meat lovers creation covered with pepperoni, Italian sausage, ham and ground beef. Another meaty choice is their Salami Peppadew Pizza that smothers the cheese base with whole slices of Genoa salami, red onion, and peppadew peppers. For the vegetarian they offer their Garden Vegetable with Ricotta, topped with sautéed mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, red onion, artichokes, roasted red pepper, and whole green olives, all baked in mozzarella and ricotta cheeses then sprinkled with fresh basil.

They have nice selection on their menu and they offer a number of deep-dish pizza specialties like The Italian, made with roasted eggplant, garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes and black olives. The Philly Cheese Steak pizza does not have sauce and is piled with sautéed, thinly-sliced strips of sirloin steak, smothered with onions, cheeses and mushrooms.
A must-try experience brought to the Houston metropolitan area is the national restaurant chain BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and their incredible deep-dish pizzas. Located at 7637 FM 1960 Road W, Houston, TX, their menu offers creations like their Gourmet Five Meat that is stacked with their house-made meatballs, pepperoni, oven-roasted ham, smoked bacon, Italian sausage and Parmesan cheese. For those who do not eat meat there is the Vegetarian topped with sliced mushrooms, green bell peppers, black olives, white onions and seasoned tomatoes. For those with an adventurous palate is their Sweet Pig pizza, covered with pineapple, seasoned tomatoes and oven-roasted ham.
