The city of Pittsburgh will kick off the holiday season with several free events, including the citywide Comcast Light Up Night Festival which will offer special holiday events throughout the city. Many of the free holiday attractions will debut on the weekend before Thanksgiving and will continue through the holidays. Check out all the free family-friendly fun to be had in Pittsburgh, PA in 2017.

Comcast Light Up Night
Nov. 18 @ 4 p.m.

The holidays will be kicked off in style with Comcast Light Up Night on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Take the family to enjoy high-quality music and entertainment on four stages. Headliners will include Andy Grammer, Maggie Lindemann, MCG Jazz All Stars, and Lyndsey Smith and Soul Distribution. The Annual Tree Lighting and Santa’s Arrival will be at Oxford Centre at 5:45 p.m., followed by free horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa’s reindeer, and free indoor activities for kids. The Unity Tree Lighting with Rooftop Fireworks will be at Fifth Avenue Place at 7 p.m., along with the Winter Wonderland ice carving display of Arctic Ice Animals, live ice carving, and activities for kids. The American Cancer Society’s Tribute of Light/Plaza Tree Lighting will be at PPG Plaza at 5:30 p.m. The Fireworks Finale will be at BNY Mellon New Music Stage at 9 p.m.

Black Friday in Pittsburgh

Do your Black Friday shopping in Downtown Pittsburgh, where they will offer free activities to make the day festive. This will be a free bonus day for Kidsplay, so the kids will be able to enjoy holiday activities and have fun. There will be free carriage rides at PPG Place, free Holly Trolley Rides, and free activities throughout Downtown.

Holiday Kids Play

Kidsplay will offer free activities for children on weekends before the holidays. You can take the free Holly Trolley to all the Downtown festivities, including Kidsplay. Kids will get to meet the Snow Queen and her sister, visit a Reading Room with Carnegie Library, and enjoy kid-friendly holiday crafts and activities.

Take advantage of the free transportation through Downtown Pittsburgh on weekends during the holiday season. The stops are slightly different on Sat. and Sun., but might include PPG Place, U.S. Steel Tower where the Creche is located, Heinz History Center, Kidsplay, and Fifth Ave. Place.

People’s Gas Holiday Market & Santa’s House

Take the family for a stroll through the festive open-air Holiday Market to enjoy the charm of the European tradition. The wooden chalets will house vendors selling a variety of high-quality, unique gift items.  The Holiday Market will feature daily entertainment, including ethnic dancers, local musicians, school groups, and more. Santa’s House will offer a visit to St. Nick and commemorative photos in exchange for a suggested donation of $5 to the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

BNY Mellon Season of Lights

The BNY Mellon Season of Lights will be illuminated by Santa Claus on Comcast Light Up Night. The stunning Sphere Tree will give light shows every half hour on evenings through Mid-January.

PPG Place Wintergarden and 2017 Gingerbread House Display

Visit the PPG Place Wintergarden to see the holiday exhibits, including the 15th Annual Gingerbread and Train Display. Admission will be free, but donations will be accepted for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Free Care Fund.

Pittsburgh Crèche

The Pittsburgh Creche is considered the most impressive holiday tradition in the city. The creche is the only authorized replica of the Creche displayed in St. Peter’s Square in Rome. The creche includes 19 larger-than-life figures portraying the Nativity, the birth of Jesus. The Creche Is one of the stops on the weekend free Holly Trolley.

MassMutual Pittsburgh Ice Rink at PPG Place

The ice rink will be a great place to get refreshing exercise with the family through the winter season. The rink will open with the Comcast Light Up celebration will be open through late February. Admission is $8/Adults (13-49), $7/Children through age 21, Seniors ages 50 and up, and Military with ID. Skate rental $4.
