San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is one of the best in the country for those who want to split the difference between the outdoor camping festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo and those set in large urban centers like Chicago’s Lollapalooza. Outside Lands takes place in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, where the open fields and varied vegetation creates the illusion of isolation despite the festival’s location in the heart of the city.
The 2016 edition of Outside Lands features one of the festival’s best lineups in its nine-year history. Radiohead will be making one of their few North American tour stops at Outside Lands, marking a return to the festival after performing at its launch in 2008.
One year after his his triumphant performance at Glastonbury in England, Lionel Richie will also be headlining. With a new Las Vegas residency, the R&B and funk icon has developed an impressive live show and the former Commodores frontman has a huge catalog of hits to draw from.
And the final headliner is LCD Soundsystem, who are marking their 2016 comeback by performing at basically all of the major festivals. James Murphy and company have promised a new album later in the year, but like Radiohead, precious few details are known about the album and its release.
With the Outside Lands announcement -- other artists scheduled to perform include Lana Del Rey, J. Cole, Duran Duran, Zedd, Ryan Adams, Major Lazer, Air, Sufjan Stevens, Chance the Rapper, Beach House, Miguel, Halsey and many, many more -- the shape of the summer festival circuit is finally filling out.
