Rapper, singer and songwriter Nicki Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1982. She grew up in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago and was raised in Jamaica, Queens, New York. A young talented Minaj successfully auditioned for admission to the visual and performing arts LaGuardia High School in Manhattan. After graduation, she wanted to become an actress. Minaj was cast in the 2001 Off-Broadway play "In Case You Forget". When her acting career didn't take off, she focused on music by briefly signing with Brooklyn group Full Force. After Minaj left Full Force, she uploaded songs on her Myspace profile and sent several of her songs to people in the music industry. Her talent was first spotted by Young Money CEO Fendi on MySpace and later caught the attention of rapper Lil Wayne. In August 2009, Minaj signed a recording contract with Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment.

As of December 2014, the song has sold 5 million digital downloads in the United States.
