Strange Brew is not only known as a venue that offers gigs to local and upcoming musicians, it is also known as a listening room that legendary performers love to play. This fabulous venue plays host to Texas legends and nationally touring musicians. In the past, artists such as A.J. Croce and the Glenn Miller Orchestra have played at Strange Brew.
Coming up in the next couple of months are performances by several well known Texas musicians. Two of the shows are one night shows while the third can be seen on a weekly basis.
For those who love Texas music, Jimmie is no stranger. For those new to the scene, his music is a blend of country, folk and rock, also known as Americana. Jimmie has a high plaintive voice that sounds like no one else. He is originally from the Texas panhandle and has been living is Austin for many years. Back in his West Texas days, Jimmie teamed up with now legendary musicians Joe Ely and Butch Hancock to form the Flatlanders. Although this band did not make it big back in the early '70s, they have always had a large cult following and have since released new recordings and toured. Jimmie has been nominated for a Grammy and always puts on a poignant and personal show.
This show will be on Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 both in advance and at the door. The show usually sells out, so plan accordingly.
As mentioned above, Butch Hancock is also one of the original members of the Flatlanders. He, too, grew up on the West Texas plains and has jokingly commented that the large amount of talent coming out of that region is the result of chasing the pesticide truck as kids. Whether this is the case or not, Hancock is widely regarded as one of the best songwriters in this genre.
You will get the chance to hear many of these masterpieces at his show on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 day of show.
Not everyone may be familiar with the name Ernie Durawa but you have no doubt heard his talent on numerous recordings. Ernie is a fabulous drummer that has played with the likes of Texas music legends Doug Sahm, Texas Tornadoes and Delbert McClinton.
Luckily for those living in Austin, Ernie plays a gig every Tuesday night at Strange Brew, starting at 6 p.m. Not only does Ernie have an amazing band with him on stage, every week he has a special guest sitting in. In the past these guests have included Augie Meyers and Joe King Carrasco. You will never be disappointed with Ernie's band and his special guests.
Cover charge is $6.
Strange Brew is located at 5326 Manchaca Road in South Austin and there is usually ample parking.
