The 7th Annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards honors this year’s top artists

The Hollywood Music in Media Awards is one of the very first awards shows of the season and highlights one of the most important aspects of entertainment that way too often gets overlooked – the music you hear in media. An event like this not only brings attention to the world’s greatest songwriters, music artists and composers from around the world, it also gives independent artists a platform to showcase their talent and provides them with the opportunities to connect with some of the biggest musical names behind Hollywood’s most successful blockbusters.

On Thursday night, the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles provided the perfect atmosphere to celebrate those achievements. A list of this year’s nominees included Justin Hurwitz for “La La Land”, Michael Giacchino, who was up for Best Original Score in a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film for “Doctor Strange”, the song “Faith” performed by Stevie Wonder featuring Ariana Grande from the animated film “Sing”, and Hans Zimmer for “The Crown”.

AXS was there to speak with some of the guests and to find out who this year’s award-winners would be.The 2016 HMMA live performances included GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester, singer/songwriter Melanie, solo artist Diego Garcia, child prodigy Ty Waters and rocker Steve Cooke.

Some of the evening’s big HMMA winners were Nicholas Britell, who took home the prize for Best Original Score in a Feature Film for “Moonlight”, Ships Have Sailed who won for the Alternative genre, Best Song in a Documentary went to “A Minute to Breathe” from “Before the Flood” written and performed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Nora Felder took home the award for Outstanding Music Supervision in Television for “Stranger Things” and Best Song in an Animated Film went to “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from “Trolls”, written by Justin Timberlake, Max Martin and Shellback. Performed by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. Although Justin Timberlake was unable to attend, he did accept the award with a heartfelt thank-you to the Hollywood Music in Media Awards streaming directly from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Event producers Erman Baradi and Brandon Waites, founders of MixKnowledgy, worked alongside fellow organizers Tribe Unity, in providing a lively environment for the HMMA rooftop after party. Erman told AXS, “I’ve never seen an awards show with such diversity in its categories. I think it's great for fresh faces or musicians and artists who don't always get the recognition deserved. I love meeting breakout artists. We were able to gather great guests for the after party. The one I wanted to see most was Polly A, who is signed to Adam Levine's label. We also got Rime Salmi - a good friend of mine - and Kristine Mirelle, Essel, Josh Levine, and Jenni Mari. DJ Jake Weber and DJ Ollie Layda joined us for the evening as well".

Hosted by Dylan Berry, and executive produced by Brent Harvey, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards has garnered a reputation as being one of the best prognosticators for the upcoming award season. Some of last year’s winners included Tom Holkenborg for “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Till it Happens to You” from “The Hunting Ground” which was written by Diane Warren and Lady Gaga.

The 2016 Hollywood Music in Media Awards was as usual, a huge success. It’s one of those events in Los Angeles where you can enjoy the best music, meet incredible talent, and get to hear some inspiring stories from around the world. This awards show has cemented its place in the industry as the premier kick-off to the season that will undoubtedly bring some insight into the future of music.
