“Why is it easy for everyone else?”
It’s difficult to find lyrics more brutally honest than those, and if there were a line to perfectly summarize Julien Baker’s wonderfully melancholy young catalog, it's that one. Two years into her professional career following the release of her debut Sprained Ankle LP, Baker is still finding new ways to pull at our already fragile heart strings each time she releases a new song. That seems to be the case once again, as she shared the second single from her upcoming sophomore album on Wednesday with its title track, “Turn Out The Lights.”
As seen and heard in the new video above, Baker ditches society and looks to find an answer to her question in nature. Most of the video sees her following a lit fuse through forests and farmlands before the sun starts to go down on her adventure while the song reaches a dramatically heavy climax.
The video was directed by Sophia Peer, whom Baker fans will recognize for also being at the creative helm of the music video for her previous single, “Appointments.”
Turn Out The Lights is currently scheduled for an Oct. 27 release via her new label, Matador Records. She’ll kick off her lengthy fall tour tonight at Atlanta’s Masquerade Music Park. Her North American fall run will keep her on the road until Dec. 20, during which she’ll make notable stops at New York City’s Town Hall for her album release show, and Boston’s Somerville Theatre the following night.
Tickets for select shows on her fall tour are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking here.
