2016 Billboard Music Awards: The Weeknd, Justin Bieber are the leading nominees

The Weeknd and Justin Bieber are the leading nominees for the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, which will be presented on May 22 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. ABC will have the live U.S. telecast at 8 p.m. ET. Ludacris and Ciara are hosting the ceremony. The finalists/nominees for 2016 Billboard Music Awards were announced on April 11, 2016. The show's performers and presenters are to be announced.

The Weeknd scored nominations in 19 categories, while Bieber is a finalist in 12 categories, including Top Artist, Top Male Artist and Top Hot 100 Artist. Other multiple nominees include Fetty Wap and Drake (11 nominations each) and Taylor Swift and Adele (eight nominations). All of these artists except Fetty Wap are contenders for the prize of Top Artist and Top Billboard 200 Artist.

Fetty Wap is up for the prizes of Top New Artist, a category whose other nominees include OMI, Charlie Puth, Silentó and Bryson Tiller. Other categories in which he recevied nominations include Top 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist and Top Rap Artist.

In the category of Top Male Artist, the nominees are Bieber, Drake, Fetty Wap, Ed Sheeran and The Weeknd. The nominees for Top Female Artist are Adele, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Swift. For the prize of Top Duo/Group, the contenders are Maroon 5, One Direction, Twenty One Pilots, the Rolling Stones and U2.

According to Billboard, the Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on "key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound." The 2016 Billboard Music Awards are based on the reporting period of March 23, 2015 through March 17, 2016.

The 2015 Billboard Music Awards show (hosted by Chrissy Teigen and Ludacris) was the highest-rated Billboard Music Awards in 14 years, according to Variety and Nielsen. The show had 11.1 million U.S. viewers. Swift was the biggest winner that year: She received eight prizes (out of 14 nominations), including Top Artist, Top Female Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album for 1989. Other winners included Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea and Pharrell Williams, who won three prizes each. Performers at the 2015 show included Mariah Carey, Van Halen, Kelly Clarkson, Kanye West, Fall Out Boy, Wiz Khalifa, Little Big Town, Faith Hill, Azalea, Britney Spears, Nick Jonas, John Legend, Meghan Trainor and Imagine Dragons.
