The Atlanta Gladiators of the ECHL will have a French bulldog race on March 27 when they host the Orlando Solar Bears at the Infinite Energy Arena. During the first intermission, 60 French bulldogs will race on the ice in heats with the successful bulldogs competing in a championship race.
To register your bulldog, please call (770) 497-5100, or email the Gladiators organization at email@example.com. The dog must be under 25 pounds, and fans are asked to send a picture of the dog to the Gladiators. The French bulldog race is occurring after the Gladiators hosted a very successful wiener dog race on Dec. 27 against the Florida Everblades.
In addition to the French bulldog race, the Gladiators are having two other promotions. As part of Wild Winsday, if the Gladiators beat the Solar Bears, fans get a free ticket to their matinee against the South Carolina Stingrays on April 7.
Also, three Atlanta United players of Major League Soccer will be signing autographs for two hours prior to the game. The United players are Eric Remedi, Hector Villalba and Leandro Gonzalez Pirez. In order for Gladiators fans to meet the United players for an autograph and picture, they need to sign up for a V.I.P. Autograph experience.
The Gladiators currently have a record of 25 wins, 25 losses, seven overtime losses and two shootout losses for 59 points. The team is in fifth place in the ECHL South Division and are two points back of the Stingrays for a playoff spot.
Atlanta's leading scorer is Justin MacDonald, who has 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 points. Orlando's leading scorer is Mathieu Foget, who has 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points.
The Gladiators last win was on March 10, when they beat the Jacksonville Icemen 4-1. It was a great game for Atlanta center Nick Bligh, who had a hat trick, and the game-winning goal from Jack Stander and Brett McKenzie at 6:57 of the first period. All three of Bligh's goals came in the first period.
Meanwhile, three players have joined the Gladiators in the past week. They were Matt Lane, McKenzie and John Furgele. Lane, a center, returned to the Gladiators from the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League on March 6. In 32 games with the Gladiators, Lane has six goals and 12 assists for 18 points. McKenzie, a center, returned to the Gladiators from the Providence Bruins of the AHL on March 8. In 49 games with the Gladiators, McKenzie has 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points. McKenzie was originally selected in the seventh round, 194th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Also on March 8, the Gladiators traded right winger Branden Troock to the Maine Mariners for defenseman John Furgele. Troock, who was drafted in the fifth round, 134th overall, by the Dallas Stars in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, played 20 games for the Gladiators this season. He had 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points. Furgele has two assists in two games for the Gladiators after having eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in 51 games with the Mariners.
