The Los Angeles Kings are set to begin their 2018-19 National Hockey League regular season on Oct. 5 at the Staples Center. Their opponent that night will be a Pacific Division rival, the San Jose Sharks.
It is also a special night for Kings fans. Those in attendance will receive a limited edition collectible art print presented by McDonald's. The promotion is a full arena giveaway.
Even though this will be the Kings' opening game, it will be the second game for the San Jose Sharks. On Wednesday, the Sharks were beaten 5-2 to the Anaheim Ducks in what could be considered by some as a surprise. Rickard Rakell and Jakob Silfverberg recorded three points each for Anaheim as Rakell had one goal and two assists and Silfverberg had three assists.
In the offseason, the Sharks made NHL headlines when they acquired all-star defenseman and two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson from the Ottawa Senators. Karlsson, and Brent Burns (the 2017 Norris Trophy winner), could be considered among the best defensemen in the NHL, and now they will have the chance of playing together on the same team.
The acquisition of Karlsson on Sept. 13 came at a hefty price for San Jose. In return, the Sharks had to give up Chris Tierney, Dylan DeMelo, Josh Norris, Rudolfs Balcers and three NHL draft picks. The Sharks also received prospect Francis Perron.
The Kings meanwhile will have some new faces in their lineup as well. They include forwards Ilya Kovalchuk (who returns to the NHL after spending time in the Kontinental Hockey League and winning a gold medal for Russia at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang), and rookie forwards Jaret Anderson-Dolan and Austin Wagner, who have cracked the Kings roster.
