British folk-rock band Mumford & Sons has become a staple to the music scene since emerging in 2009 with a style all their own. The band became known for using banjos intertwined with rock and since then, they have evolved ditching the banjos for more anthemic sounds. With four studio albums under their belt since the major label debut Sigh No More, Mumford & Sons has an extensive catalog with a song for everyone. Here are five of the band’s best lyrics.

5. “Wilder Mind”

“Wilder Mind” is the title track to the 2015 album that saw the band go in a different direction from the previous two studio efforts with more guitars and abandoning banjos. Despite changing their tune, the album was an international success debuting at No. 1 in seven countries. In the US, the album opened with 231,000 copies sold and 249,000 total units.

Best lyrics:

It’s in my blood, it’s in my water
You try to tame me, tame me from the start
When the din is in your eye, flash your flesh
Desperate for a need to rise

With a silver crystal on
In the place that’s safe from harm
I had been blessed with a wilder mind

4. “The Cave”

“The Cave” is Mumford & Sons third single of their career deriving from their debut album Sign No More. The song was used in popular media including coverage of the 2010 World Cup in England. It was also referenced in musician Example's song “All My Lows.”

Best lyrics:

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence when you know the maker’s heart
So make your siren’s call and sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say
‘Cause I need freedom now and I need to know how
To live my life as it’s meant to be

3. “Picture You”

Found on 2018's Delta, “Picture You” is a tender moment on the album that shows the growth of the band over the years. It comes from an album that is far different than the previous Wilder Mind (2015) and focuses on introspection. “Picture You” is a highlight on the set.

Best lyrics:

When I feel it rising
It’s a heartbeat away
And I don’t know how to fight it
And now
You don’t know me like this
And I
Don’t know how to fight it
It’s a heartbeat away

And I picture you
Soaked in light
I picture you
And in you I had no doubt
When the chaos calls me out
And it feels like it’s nothing I could do
I picture you

2. “Guiding Light”

“Guiding Light” was released as the lead single to the band's fourth studio album Delta in 2018 and is a folk rock song that doesn't end and explodes in the right moments. It actually took the band over a year to record the track, trying several different ways to get it right. The work paid off as it reached No. 1 on both the Adult Alternative and Alternative charts, peaking at No. 5 on Hot Rock Songs.

Best lyrics:

And I know you claim that you’re alright
But fix your eyes on me
I guess I’m all you have
And I swear you’ll the dawn again

Well I know I had it all on the line
But don’t just sit with folded hands and become blind
‘Cause even when there is no star in sight
You’ll always be my only guiding light

1. “Broken Crown”

“ Broken Crown” comes from Mumford & Sons Grammy winning album Babel (2012) and is a deeply personal song that Marcus Mumford refuses to tell what the meaning is behind the track. “Crown” describes a hypocrisy in religion, a broken humanity. It's a rough and ragged song that earns the No. 1 spot on this list.

Best lyrics:

The pull on my flesh is just too strong
It stifles the choice and the air in my lungs
Better not to breathe than breathe a lie
When I open my body and breathe alive
I will not speak of your sin
There was no way out for him
The mirror shows now
Your values are all shot
