There’s something magical about Ed Sheeran. What else could explain such a meteoric rise to fame? He began his quest to become the biggest male pop star on the planet less than a decade ago and pursued it with dogged determination – through couch surfing and playing as many gigs as possible. Through five EPs and then finally, his studio album debut with + (Plus), back in 2011.

The list of accolades that followed is too long to name. But, each of his three studio albums launched to massive success. His most recent album, ÷ (Divide), smashed all kinds of records. In 2017, Sheeran was awarded an MBE by Prince Charles and 2018 saw the “Shape of You” singer-songwriter claim the No. 2 spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list.

Beyond his lofty titles, multiple Grammy and BRIT Awards and mind-blowing sales stats, the “Perfect” singer has climbed inside the hearts of millions of fans all over the world. The seemingly humble guy and his one-man-show continue to captivate thousands of people at sold-out live concerts across the globe.

If polled about what makes him so special, diehard Sheerios would undoubtedly fire off a long list of Ed's most endearing qualities. We’ve listed five reasons we love Ed Sheeran below.

1. His boy-next-door persona.

Ed Sheeran is a huge music superstar who presents himself as your brother’s best friend or that super nice, boy-next-door. He’s refreshingly unpretentious. By now, he’s done hundreds of interviews with various media outlets and he graciously gives candid, genuine answers to myriads of questions. He also takes time to visit local radio stations and is always warm, humble and polite.

2. He’s a lyrical/songwriting genius.

Ed sells millions of records because he writes such swoon-worthy, relatable songs. He paints such vivid images as in his breakout hit, “The A Team”: “White lips, pale face/breathing in snowflakes” and in “Perfect”: “Dancing in the dark/With you between my arms/barefoot on the grass/listening to our favorite song.”

Beyond his sweeping ballads, he’s a rap boss, as in “Eraser,” “Don’t,” “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” and more. He’s also written or co-written songs for other artists including “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber, “I Was Made for Loving You” by Tori Kelly, “Everything Has Changed” and “End Game” with Taylor Swift and more.

3. He commands huge stadiums with just a mic, guitar and loop pedal.

Ed holds his audiences in the palm of his hand with just his guitar, a microphone and loop pedal. In 2015, he became the first solo artist in music history to play three sold-out shows at Wembley in the UK to a collective 240,000 fans. He didn’t need a band, lasers or a big huge production to keep his audience fully engaged. They sing along, dance, light cell phones and shower him with screams and applause.

4. He supports multiple children’s charities.

From UK children’s hospice organizations to youth homeless charities, Ed supports multiple children’s charities. In 2017, he made a life-changing trip to Liberia to support Red Nose Day. He released a video for his inspirational track, “What Do I Know?” featuring kids he met and recorded an emotional diary of the trip. He’s also auctioned clothes and other personal items to raise money for children’s hospice and generously gives back part of what he’s earned to help those in need.

5. He’s an animal lover.

Who can resist a guy that loves animals? Ed and his fiancée Cherry (the debate is still out if they secretly tied the knot) have two cats, Dorito and Calippo, who “set up their own” Instagram account called “thewibbles” and the furry felines have amassed 387,000 followers. We think that’s just too cute and purrfect for words.
