Pitbull is known for his chart-topping hits like “Timber,” “Give Me Everything,” “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)”, “Krazy,” and “The Anthem,” but there’s plenty of things even diehard fans don’t know about the Cuban-American rapper. While his rags to riches story is already known, here are five things you didn’t know about the Miami-based rap superstar.
1. Pitbull's name represents his real life fight.
Born Armando Christian Perez in 1981, Pitbull has gone by many names in the years since, including Mr. 305 (for his Miami zip code) to Mr. Worldwide. But his iconic Pitbull stage name is what describes the rapper best. In an interview with NPR Music, Pit explained that he has “the same mentality of the dog or the breed for the simple fact that don't believe in the word 'lose' — and when they do, fight to the death.” “That’s where 'Pitbull' comes from — the fight,” he said. “You know, I'm in love with the fight. But at the same time, pitbulls are illegal in Miami, so it makes me the only pitbull with papers. The only legal pitbull. “
2. The future superstar didn't actually earn his high school diploma.
Pitbull “graduated” from Coral Park Senior High School in Miami 1999, but he didn’t really have enough credits to graduate. In fact, the rapper told Ocean Drive magazine that his high school principal handed him a diploma because he didn’t want the troublemaking teen in his school the next year.
3. Pitbull is a sharp dressed man thanks to his dad.
Pitbull told Ocean Drive he always looked up to his father, Armando Perez, Sr., saying his old man “was always dressed very sharp, always smelled good, always groomed right.” While he once revealed on George Lopez’ late-night talk show that he used to live near the “mecca of Goodwill” and that he still has de todo un poco (“a little bit of everything”) from the charity store chain, today, Pit says he spends his money on his wardrobe because he looks at it as an investment in himself. It’s also no surprise that he now has his own clothing line, called After Dark, and a fragrance.
4. Pit likes to party, but not in public.
Pitbull doesn’t go out to clubs anymore because he’s too famous. Instead, he parties in private in a “controlled environment,” according to Billboard. “With the way I get loose and like to lose my mind, somebody might record it. I'd rather do it in a controlled environment. The whole world doesn't have to know what you do every minute of your life."
5. He admits he’s a sellout.
While some people have criticized the former street rapper for his many endorsement deals with Kodak, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, Dodge, Bud Light and Norwegian Cruise Lines, Pitbull has no problem with the label. “They’re right. I did sell out. I sell out arenas, I sell out stadiums. I sell out a bunch of things all around the world," he told Vanity Fair.
