The Philadelphia 76ers have had a bad run with injuries over the past few seasons, and that streak has seemingly continued. The Sixers announced that rookie Zhaire Smith injured his left foot at a summer developmental camp in Las Vegas.
The team will not release a timetable for his return until they receive a firm diagnosis.
The 76ers have dealt with numerous injuries to first-round picks in recent years. Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons both missed their rookie seasons, while Markelle Fultz, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, was limited for much of the year with a shoulder injury.
The 76ers entered the 2018 NBA Draft with the 16th overall pick, but they traded down to No. 16 to acquire Smith and a future first-round pick.
The developmental camp was being held by former NBA assistant coach Tim Grgurich.
Depending on the nature of the injury, Smith still figures prominently into Philadelphia’s long-term plans. The 6-foot-4 Smith is one of the team’s key acquisitions after missing out on LeBron James and Kawhi Leonard.
Smith was a standout at Texas Tech and quickly rose up draft boards prior to June’s NBA Draft.
