The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced the shortlist for the 2018 Student Film Awards. The Awards were globally expanded in 2017, so this year’s crop of 60 shortlisted films hail from 469 submissions from students at film schools in 35 countries including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, the U.K., and the U.S. The awards gala will take place on Friday, June 29 at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, Calif. This expansion prompted a notable increase in the amount of submissions. A total of 111 film schools submitted films with 43 of those being first-time submissions. Furthermore, the number of countries entering increased from 15 in 2017 to 35 this year. Film schools could send up to nine films for consideration across four prize categories: Animation, Documentary, Live Action Film and the Special Jury Prize, selected by BAFTA Student Film Awards panel members.
BAFTA’s international presence is growing and the BAFTA Student Film Awards “seeks to foster strong talent connects across the U.K., U.S., and Asia. The international expansion also supports BAFTA’s Access for All campaign which strives to ensure “talented individuals are offered a clear pathway to careers in the entertainment industry, uninhibited by background, demographics or personal circumstance.”
Today’s talented student filmmakers potentially represent the vision and the voice of film in the future. The BAFTA Student Film Awards shortlist represents some of the best examples of what the future of the art form holds.
“The future of film is in excellent hands. The BAFTA Student Film Awards have, in recent years, been one of the first opportunities to catch rising stars like Ryan Coogler. We have little doubt that, among this year's Shortlist, are some more filmmaking stars of the future,” said Sandro Monetti and Peter Morris, Co-Chairs of the BAFTA Los Angeles New Talent Committee in a press statement.
A host of well-known artists like Mary J. Blige, Michelle Williams, Gary Oldman and more contemplate the future of film by answering the captivating question: “What will film be like in 50 years?” in a BAFTA Los Angeles video clip posted on YouTube earlier this year. (Watch it above). Aspiring student filmmakers, such as those on this year’s Student Film Awards shortlist, might ultimately play a role in shaping, molding, and defining the evolution of film.
