The Beach Boys, who paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of “Pet Sounds” earlier this year with a deluxe CD/DVD box set, will honor the 50th anniversary of the song “Good Vibrations” on Oct. 10. with the release of a special 12-inch sunburst vinyl EP three days earlier on Oct. 7, the group announced Aug. 29.
The disc will include the audio of the original 7” single, an alternate studio take, a collection of edits from various studio sessions, an instrumental version and a concert performance taken from a rehearsal in Hawaii from the aborted live album “Lei'd In Hawaii.” It will also add “Let's Go Away For Awhile,” the single's B-side from the “Pet Sounds” album. The graphics will feature the original 1966 U.S. single art and the Japan version with a visible typo in the title.
“Good Vibrations,” debuted at No. 81 on the U.S. Billboard singles chart on Oct. 22, 1966, and took a full eight weeks -- until Dec. 10 -- to hit No. 1 during its 14-week run. The song was the Beach Boy's second of only three No. 1 Billboard hits between 1962 and 1989, with the other two being “I Get Around” in 1964 and “Kokomo” in 1988. As much of an achievement as the song was, it was displaced one week later at the top of the charts by “Winchester Cathedral” by the New Vaudeville Band. That song, in one of the Grammy Awards' most embarrassing moments, beat out both “Good Vibrations” AND the Beatles' “Eleanor Rigby” for “Best Contemporary Rock n' Roll Recording, Vocal or Instrumental” at the ceremony in 1966. It was the song's only Grammy nomination that year. “Good Vibrations” was also a No. 1 hit in the UK, where it lasted 13 weeks on the British singles chart.
A special 50th anniversary tribute video of “Good Vibrations” that will feature Beach Boys fans is being put together in connection with the anniversary. Fans in North America and the U.K. will be featured in it, the group said. Information is available on the Beach Boys website. The "Beach Boys Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" set is a five disc (4 CD/1 DVD) collection released earlier this year that features mono and various stereo mixes, instrumental versions, outtakes and live performances of songs from the album, plus unseen photos from the original cover shoot at the petting zoo at the San Diego Zoo.
