Shoppers are urged to think big on Black Friday, the day that retailers roll out some of the biggest bargains of the year. But the day after Black Friday is a day to think small, as Nov. 24 is designated as Small Business Saturday. Smaller businesses will be offering big deals too, and music lovers in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area have lots of cool places to do their seasonal shopping. Here are our favorite Twin Cities area businesses to visit on Small Business Saturday.

Electric Fetus
2000 4th Ave. S. – Minneapolis

It would be a disservice to simply call Electric Fetus a record store. Sure, they’ve got a huge selection of new and used titles and they specialize in vinyl. But there are all kinds of other items waiting for that would make perfect holiday gifts: turntables and stereo systems, books and stationery, quirky housewares, candles and incense, kid’s stuff, bath and beauty items and lots of cool clothing including Fetus branded items. Many items in the store will be 20% off on Small Business Saturday.

Fifth Element
2411 Hennepin Ave. – Minneapolis

Fifth Element is a hip-hop store that offers CDs, vinyl, DVDs, digital sales, clothing, art supplies and many other specialty items. They’re also the brick & mortar outlet for the Rhymesayers online store, so this is the place to find new releases from Nikki Jean, Grieves, Atmosphere, Sa-Roc, Brother Ali, Aesop Rock and Malibu Ken. Soundset T-shirts, hoodies, caps, cinch bags, posters and laminates are also in stock. Also, shop for whatever might be left of the Black Friday collectible releases that’ll be for sale the day before Small Business Saturday.

Know Name Records
6009 Portland Ave. S. – Minneapolis

Know Name Records specializes in used vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and even cassettes, and that means you can sell your unwanted titles to them and pick up some extra holiday cash. These guys have been around for more than 30-years and they still carry some of the cool stuff that they did back in the day, like incense and black lights. If you have a serious vinyl collector on your holiday gift list, bring their wish list to Know Name and let them help you be the season’s most popular gift giver.

Twin Town Guitars
3400 Lyndale Ave. S. – Minneapolis

If there’s a musician on your list, make sure to visit Twin Town Guitars on Small Business Saturday. They have collectible guitars like a 1966 Gibson Firebird III and others that any player would love to have. And besides the electric, acoustic and bass guitars, they also have drum kits, keyboards, amps, effects and accessories galore. You can even give the gift of lessons here, and Twin Town also offers instrument repair.

Flashlight Vinyl
407 Central Ave. S.E., Ste. 101 – Minneapolis

The name of this place tells you what they’re all about, vinyl! They have a very large selection of new and used rock, punk, jazz, metal, blues and disco albums and you’ll find some wild titles here that you never knew existed. Flashlight Vinyl also occasionally hosts in-store appearances and have had acts like Hobbyist, Liz Saad and Henry James Patterson in recently. If you can’t stop by on Small Business Saturday, watch for the store’s special events like Crate Digger’s Weekend and the 25 cents blow-out sale.
