To some, James Brown is “Soul Brother No. 1.” To artists and bands such as Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears, he was an inspiration.

Few artists have had a more profound impact on the sound of music quite like Brown did, and one can listen to his infectious, funky sound when attending a Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears show. Their modern take on the blues and soul that transformed music is a remarkable mix, and it is quite refreshing to listen to a band that respects the history, not mock it.

Black Joe Lewis (b. Joe Lewis) formed The Honeybears in Austin, Texas in 2007. Lewis himself didn’t get into music until he picked up a guitar for the first time while working in a local pawn shop. At the time Lewis was getting started, Austin had a robust, if somewhat underground, blues/garage scene in the city’s Red River district, and it was here where he found the musicians that would make up his backing band, The Honeybears.

The band cut their first EP in 2005, their first LP in 2007, and has recently become a fixture on the Billboard Blues charts, with their latest LP, Backlash, going all the way to No. 3. While the band is finding success on the charts,  at its heart, the funky band is at its apex when it plays live shows, and later this summer, the band will hit the road playing shows from city-to-city, coast-to-coast, keeping the old-school feeling of blues, soul, and funk alive.
