BTS has blasted straight to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart with their latest album Love Yourself: Answer, Billboard reports. This new No. 1 rank on the distinctive U.S. chart is the K-pop band’s second, following their previous chart-topper Love Yourself: Tear, which dropped back in May.
Love Yourself: Answer reportedly debuted atop the chart earning 185,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 30 per Nielsen Music, with 141,000 of that total being traditional album sales. Love Yourself: Answer is the third album in the Love Yourself trilogy and comes via BigHit Entertainment. The album tops the Billboard 200 chart dated Sept. 8 with the ranking appearing across Billboard websites on Sept. 5.
BTS impressively broke their own record with Love Yourself: Answer’s first-week sales and total units earned to score the band and the K-pop genre’s best week to date. The new tally bests BTS and K-pop’s previous record set by Love Yourself: Tear’s first week of 135,000 total units with 100,000 of those being album sales.
BTS has been setting and smashing all sorts of records recently including scoring the most Twitter engagements, garnering the biggest 24-hour YouTube views with the music video for “Idol” and becoming the first K-pop band to ever score a UK Top 40 hit with “Idol.” The song is Love Yourself: Answer’s lead single and the video also became the fastest video to top 100 million YouTube views this year.
Answer also reportedly scored the third-biggest week for a pop album in 2018, beat only by Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods and Ariana Grande’s Sweetener. The album also racked up the third-biggest sales total (with 141,000 albums sales) behind Man of the Woods (with 242,000 sales) and Shawn Mendes’ self-titled album which sold 142,000.
Love Yourself: Answer completes the BTS trilogy which started with Love Yourself: Her’s release last year. The digital version of Answer contains an alternate version of “Idol” which features Grammy-nominated rapper, Nicki Minaj. BTS reflect on their global pop star status with pride and self-assurance in “Idol” and its colorful, culturally-symbolic music video.
The South Korean boyband shows no sign of slowing down as they continue their Love Yourself World Tour with multiple shows at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California for four non-consecutive nights including tonight, Sept. 5 (Tickets), Sept. 6. (Tickets), Sept. 8 (Tickets), and Sept. 9 (Tickets).
