California music festivals worth checking out in Summer 2019

The summer music festival season has only just begun--even though some of the biggest festivals of the season have already come and gone, there's still a whole summer of live music to enjoy, with some impressive stacked lineups, particularly in California. From Smokin Grooves presenting some of the biggest names in hip hop to the well-known Outside Lands and even a festival curated by the legendary band The Cure, the summer is full of great festivals definitely worth your time and the ticket price this summer.

June 15 — Smokin Grooves Fest (Tickets)
Long Beach, CA @ Queen Mary Events Park 

After over a decade since its last show, first-ever traveling hip-hop festival Smokin Grooves is back. The festival comes to Queen Mary Events Park later this month with headliners Usher and the iconic Erykah Badu, as well as T-PainCommon and more. Be sure to download the festival's app for all the information you need when you're there.

June 15-16 — Second Sky Festival (Sold out)
Oakland, CA @ Middle Harbor Shoreline Park

Porter Robinson himself, along with Goldenvoice, presents Second Sky Festival in Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. In addition to Robinson himself, the festival will also include Cashmere CatAnamanaguchi, and more. And the festival isn't just presenting good music--it's also supporting a good cause. Robinson and Goldenvoice will each donate $1 from every ticket sold to the Robinson Malawi Fund, as well as matching any donations made by fans at the festival.

July 19-21 — Northern Nights Music Festival 
Cook Valley, CA @ Cook's Valley Campground

While some festivals offer a day of music, Northern Nights will give you the full festival experience, camping and all, near the end of July. The festival headliners are ZHU and Big Wild, with plenty of other music scheduled over the course of the weekend. Festivalgoers can also enjoy silent discos and, of course, the festival's beautiful nature setting with natural swimming holes and towering Redwood trees.

Aug. 3 — Sad Summer Festival (Tickets
Anaheim, CA @ City National Grove of Anaheim

Sad Summer festival is bringing together some of the best of pop punk for its inaugural touring festival, especially in the wake of the departure of the famed Vans Warped Tour, with headliners The Maine and Mayday Parade. The tour closes out in early August in Anaheim and also includes interactive experiences, exclusive merch and more. Sad Summer also aims to give back through partnerships with both local and national charities. 

Aug. 3 — Santa Barbara Mariachi Festival (Tickets)
Santa Barbara, CA @ Santa Barbara Bowl

Enjoy a day of mariachi music with the Santa Barbara Mariachi Festival, coming to the Santa Barbara Bowl in early August for its 24th year. According to the festival's website, the nonprofit festival is "dedicated to promoting and preserving the tradition of mariachi music and directing its revenues to provide scholarships that help further the education of Latino students."

Aug. 9-11 — Outside Lands
San Fransisco, CA @ Golden Gate Park

Outside Lands, held in San Francisco's Golden Date Park, boasts one of the most impressive lineups of the summer festival season, featuring Paul SimonChildish GambinoTwenty One PilotsThe Lumineersblink-182Anderson .Paak and the Free NationalsKacey Musgraves, Lil Wayne, HozierCounting CrowsBebe RexhaSantigoldToro y MoiJudah & the Lion, and many more. The festival also showcases the Bay Area, from its location to its food offerings. 

Aug. 10 — Dale Fuego Fest (Tickets)
Long Beach, CA @ Queen Mary Events Park 

Queen Mary Events Park will play host to another day-long festival later in the summer, Dale Fuego, with a lineup that includes Ozuna, Anitta, Brytiago and more. And what festival would be complete with food? Dale Fuego will have some great vendors to complete your festival experience.

Aug. 31 — Pasadena Daydream Festival (Tickets)
Pasadena CA @ Brookside at the Rose Bowl

Does it get any better than a festival curated by the iconic band The Cure? In addition to the post-punk band themselves, the lineup will also include the PixiesDeftonesMogwaithe Joy Formidable, the Twilight Sad and more. The event comes after The Cure's anniversary appearance in London last year, which helped shape Pasadena Daydream. "Hyde Park was a fabulous experience, the whole day was really magical, and we wanted to create something with a similar celebratory vibe for this summer," frontman Robert Smith said in a statement.

Sept. 13-15 — Kaaboo Del Mar Music Festival
San Diego, CA @ Del Mar Racetrack & Fairgrounds

Kaaboo Del Mar has one of the most eclectic bills of all summer festivals, with acts spanning all genres.
