A Multimedia Event with Bowie Producer Jeff Rougvie & Live Music by Daily Pravda
It was almost a year ago that the world lost one of its brightest stars. Celebrate the majesty and the music of David Bowie with a multimedia event hosted by Bowie Producer Jeff Rougvie (Rykodisc) and Bowie aficionados, Boston-based The Daily Pravda. This special evening happens on Jan. 7, the evening before David Bowie’s 70th birthday, at Regent Theatre in Arlington, Massachusetts.
In 1989, Rykodisc was a small indie label located on Salem’s Pickering Wharf. They had already released recordings from jazz saxophonist Jim Pepper, Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, The Residents and Frank Zappa’s back catalog. It was the Zappa series that attracted Bowie’s attention, and after a bidding war with other labels, he chose this feisty indie to remaster and rerelease his entire RCA catalog. What followed was a collaboration between Bowie and Rougvie (VP of Special Projects for Rykodisc) to dig into the vaults and release nearly 20 albums over a 10-year period — Bowie’s 1969 Space Oddity (Man of Words/Man of Music) to 1980’s Scary Monsters. Rougvie’s stories and insights from this time are a revelation for David Bowie fans around the world, and this intimate look inside the artist/label relationship and Bowie’s creative genius is fascinating for music fans of all persuasions.
In this evening’s event, Rougvie will discuss Bowie’s magic and music, with the aid of visuals that include unseen photographs and materials from his time at Ryko. He will pull the curtain back on the behind-the-scenes challenges and triumphs of what was a massive undertaking that created a lasting legacy of the man’s work. This partnership also garnered Rykodisc a Grammy Award for their innovative Sound + Vision 3-album catalog introduction. In addition to Rougvie’s presentation, The Daily Pravda will be celebrating Bowie gems as only superfans can, with masterful re-creations of these timeless musical masterpieces, strong and true to the artist’s original intention. There will also be a Q&A session where fans can get the answers to their burning Bowie questions.
Enjoy a look inside Rougvie’s Rykodisc archives as he unleashes his acerbic wit and wisdom to provide a window into the workings of the music industry. This is only the third time Rougvie and The Daily Pravda have offered this presentation, so if you’re a Bowie fan or a music history buff, don’t miss it!
