The NAACP just announced the nominees for Entertainer of the Year at the 49th NAACP Image Awards, and the competition is stiff.
Musicians JAY-Z, Bruno Mars and Chance the Rapper will go up against actors Chadwick Boseman and Issa Rae and director Ava DuVernay for the honor. The winner will be revealed at the NAACP Image Awards early next year on TV One. The polls opened up on Monday (Oct. 9), and fans can place their vote right here.
So far, at least online, people haven’t disagreed with the nominations and rightfully so. Mars, for example, has been a radio and television mainstay after dropping his 24K Magic album last year. Chance the Rapper has touched millions with his brilliant Coloring Book album and continues to help his hometown of Chicago through a variety of socially-minded efforts like donating money to public schools.
JAY-Z is another person who deserves to be nominated, considering his 4:44 album has been the talk of the Internet since it dropped. The Brooklyn lyricist also opened up a new lane in rap music by discussing topics not usually associated with hip-hop like marriage, family struggles and how to establish financial independence.
Boseman, for his part, has made an incredible mark this year as well, starring in the upcoming biopic on Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Ava DuVernay is coming off of a Best Documentary Feature Oscar nomination for "13th" and has the film world buzzing about her upcoming movie "A Wrinkle in Time.".
Issa Rae is having an incredible year too: her HBO show “Insecure” could not be hotter in terms of critical acclaim and overall fan chatter.
