Cher and Andy Garcia hit charts with 'Fernando' cover from 'Mamma Mia' sequel

Here's something you don't see on the charts every day: Cher and actor-musician Andy Garcia, covering a hit from ABBA. But that's exactly what's happened, as the duo's cover of "Fernando" has shot up the Billboard charts ahead of the July 20 release of the ABBA musical "Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again." You can play Cher and Garcia's cover by playing the video above, and chances are you'll get hooked on it like everyone else.

According to a Tuesday report from Billboard, Cher and Garcia's version of "Fernando" has reached No. 22 on the latest edition of the magazine's Adult Contemporary singles chart. That's Cher's first charting single in roughly four years and Garcia's first charting single ever.

For comparison, the original "Fernando" was one of the two ABBA songs to reach No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary listing; as Billboard notes, the single spent two weeks at the top back in 1976. It's still one of the group's best-known tunes.

The throwback chart success feels appropriate because "Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again" is going back to the 1970's as well. The sequel to 2008's "Mamma Mia" moves back a generation to the 1970's, to discover the backstory of Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep), while her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is expecting her first child. Cher plays Ruby Sheridan, Donna's mother and Sophie's grandmother, while Garcia is cast as the titular Fernando, meaning that the movie will no doubt come up with some fictional backstory for the song as well.

And if anyone can make a 1970's pop hit sound new again, it's Cher with her timeless voice and eternal stage presence. The Grammy Award-winning singer and actress will have a musical based on her own life on Broadway at the end of 2018. "The Cher Show" will feature three different actresses playing Cher throughout her lifetime; the play is expected to open on Broadway on Dec. 13 and tickets are on sale now here.

"Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again" also stars Dominic Cooper ("Preacher"), Pierce Brosnan, Lily James ("Cinderella"), Christine Baranski ("The Good Fight"), Colin Firth ("Kingsman: The Secret Service"), Stellan Skarsgard ("Avengers: Age of Ultron") and Julie Walters. The film opens July 20, but the soundtrack - including "Fernando" - comes out July 13 and can be pre-ordered now on iTunes.
