Grammy-winning singer Cher has announced that Dancing Queen, her album of ABBA cover songs, will be released Sept. 28 on Warner Bros. Records. The 10-track collection includes Cher's renditions of most of ABBA's greatest hits, including "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," "SOS," "Fernando" and "Winner Takes It All." Her previous album was 2013's Closer to the Truth. On her Instagram account, Cher released a teaser of her version of "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)."
Cher, who won an Oscar for Best Actress for 1987's "Moonstruck," co-stars in the 2018 movie musical "Mamma Mia! Here I Go Again," the sequel to 2008's smash hit "Mamma Mia!" She plays Ruby Sheridan, the mother of Meryl Streep's character Donna. It's Cher's first acting role in a live-action movie since 2010's "Burlesque."
Cher commented in a statement: “I’ve always liked ABBA and saw the original ‘Mamma Mia’ musical on Broadway three times. After filming ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,’ I was reminded again of what great and timeless songs they wrote and started thinking, ‘Why not do an album of their music?’ The songs were harder to sing than I imagined but I’m so happy with how the music came out. I’m really excited for people to hear it. It’s a perfect time.”
"Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" isn't the only musical that Cher is involved within 2018. She's also a producer of the biographical stage musical "The Cher Show," which made its pre-Broadway debut in Chicago in June. Broadway previews for "The Cher Show" begin Oct. 6 before the show's official Broadway opening on Nov. 4. Cher does not perform in the show. Instead, three different actresses portray her at different stages in her life: Stephanie J. Block as the older Cher; Micaela Diamond, who plays Cher during her relationship with her first husband, Sonny Bono; and Teal Wicks, who plays Cher during her relationship with her second husband, Gregg Allman.
Cher is also continuing to headline concerts. She's doing an Australian tour from Sept. 26 to Oct. 18. She then continues her residency at Park MGM Las Vegas' Park Theater from Oct. 31 to Nov. 17.
