The Centennial State is gearing up for the Velorama Festival and Colorado Classic bicycle race, which are set for Aug. 10-13 (click here to get your tickets). Now that we’ve covered the incredible roster of artists set to perform in RiNo for Velorama, as well the 200-plus local merchants that will be there as part of the Denver Flea, we turn our attention to the four-stage Colorado Classic, which begins tomorrow in Colorado Springs and will air all weekend on NBCSN.
Like all four days of the event, there are plenty of fun activities planned for spectators in conjunction with the race. The Stage 1 Festival opens to the public at 9am on Thursday and promises “live bands, merchandise, vendors, awards ceremonies, a beer garden and more.” The Women’s Race will take place from approximately 10am to 11:30am (click here for a full list of participating teams and riders), followed at 12:15pm by the Colorado Springs Community Mile, a mile-long race that takes place along the finish line of the race course (register here). The Men’s Race (hit this link for a list of competitors) will take place between 1:10-4:45pm and the day wraps up with a free Stage 1 After Party with a live band and beer garden in front of Blondies & Cowboys on Tejon St.
The Colorado Classic moves on to Breckenridge for Stage 2 of the race on Friday. The second and final leg of the Women’s Race is scheduled for 11am-12:45pm, with the Men’s Race running from 2-4:45pm. The Festival Village (located at the Tiger Dredge Lot, aka Riverwalk Center) will have an expo, beer garden, a kid’s zone, official merch and more when it opens at 10am. Throughout the day, the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts will be presenting “an interactive roving performance which has giant Ants bringing children together in a gentle and intriguing landscaping project.” After the Men’s Awards Presentation, DJ f-ether and Ned Garthe Explosion will perform at the Festival Village and the night wraps up with a performance from the 30-plus member marching band Itchy-O.
The final two Stages of the Men’s Race take place in Denver on Saturday and Sunday. Beginning at 1:30pm, Stage 3 on Saturday is an 81-mile out-and-back course that runs from the festival’s hub in RiNo all the way out to Golden Gate Canyon State Park and back. The final Stage is a 7.5 mile loop running from RiNo to City Park and back. Starting at 12:20pm, competitors will run the loop 10 times before the race wraps up around 3:30pm.
For those interested in getting in on the racing action themselves, there will be Pro-Am races in Denver throughout the weekend. Men and women with a USA Cycling Permit #1905 can click here to register for the criteriums, which include thousands of dollars in cash prizes and products for the winners.
With races in three cities featuring dozens of the world’s best cyclists, a ton of live music and plenty of activities for the entire family, the inaugural Colorado Classic and Velorama Festival is looking like a unique and exciting addition to Colorado’s crowded summer calendar.
