Today's the day! The Monterey International Pop Festival is a go, celebrating its spectacular 50th anniversary as it kicks off today in beautiful Monterey, California. If your tickets are purchased and you're ready to go, the last thing you need to decide is who to see. Check out our 5 must-see artists, and view the entire schedule here. The great thing about Monterey Pop Festival is that they have set the schedule up without any overlaps, so conflicts between who's set to catch are virtually nonexistent.
The original Monterey Pop Festival took place June 16, 17 and 18 of 1967, at the height of the burgeoning late 1960s musical scene and immediately prior to the Summer of Love. This year, to commemorate the festival's jubilee, an entirely new event has been commissioned: the Monterey International Pop Festival Celebrates 50 Years. Fans coming to this year's event can relive the fest that helped set the scene for the world of music festivals as we know them today.
In addition to an all-star selection of modern pop performers specially chosen to participate in this year's Monterey Pop Festival, classic artists from the era of the festival's initial run are participating. Fans looking to experience the music of the 1960s should be sure to catch Eric Burdon and the Animals, who will be playing on Friday at 5:10 PM. Burdon and the Animals originally played the 1967 festival, making it even more amazing that they will be returning for the 50th anniversary celebration. Though appearing on the scene much later, Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaries have the same classic sound one would expect from any 1960s band. Regardless of who you choose to spend your time at Monterey Pop seeing, you're sure to enjoy the excellent selections put together for this event.
