The 91st Annual Academy Awards were announced this morning (Jan. 22). Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani read the nominations, which aired on “Good Morning America.”

It’s been a great year in film, with many worthy movies for Academy members to consider. “The Favourite” and “Roma” tied for the most nominations this year, including Best Picture and Best Director.”

“Black Panther” made some important Oscar strides by scoring seven nominations, including Best Picture, which marks the first time a superhero film has been nominated in the Oscars’ top category. The film was also nominated for Production Design and Hannah Beachler is notably the first African American to be nominated in this category.

Lady Gaga scored two nominations, for Best Original Song for “Shallow,” from “A Star Is Born,” which she shares with Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomondo. “Shallow” already won the Best Original Song Golden Globe Award and Critics Choice Award.

Gaga is also up for Best Actress for her captivating feature film debut role as aspiring singer-songwriter Ally in the film. Gaga shared the 2019 Critics Choice Best Actress award with Glenn Close, who is also nominated for Best Actress for her incomparable role in “The Wife.”

“A Star Is Born” received seven total Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Lady Gaga. Bradley Cooper picked up three nominations: Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and as a producer under the Best Picture nomination. Sam Elliot received a Best Supporting Actor nomination and the film also scored Sound Mixing and Cinematography nominations. Cooper notably didn’t receive a nomination in the Best Director category, though he won a Best Directing Award from the National Board of Review.

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” the Queen biopic film scored five Oscar nods, with Rami Malek earning a Best Actor nod for his portrayal of frontman Freddie Mercury. The movie and Malek both won Golden Globe Awards. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is also up for Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing categories.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Black Panther” have both raked in huge box office grosses with the Queen biopic amassing just under $800 million worldwide (at $798 million) and “Black Panther” grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. “A Star Is Born” also did well at the box office, grossing over $409 million worldwide.

The 91st Annual Academy Awards will be handed out in a live ceremony which will air Sunday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.
