Bentley performed at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival with some of his musical heroes and quickly acted upon his inspiration to write a new album. He returned to Telluride for a retreat with fellow songwriters Natalie Hemby, Ashley Gorley, Ross Copperman, Luke Dick, Jon Randall, and Jon Nite. The bulk of the album, including the title track, were written during that week-long retreat while watching the sun rise over the mountains and enjoying the beauty of the mountain area. He described the experience, stating, “Telluride just makes you want to reach for your guitar.”
Two months after the writing retreat, Bentley returned to Telluride with his production team and musicians to record the songs in a small studio on top of a mesa. Guitars, mandolins, banjos, and fiddles are given the chance to shine, and integrated with modern bass and drum sounds.
The songs were written about the mountains, but they are also about the mountains people are faced with every day. Bentley explained that the “struggle to put one foot in front of the other even when things are hard,” is a struggle that mankind has in common. Bentley reflected, “Looking back now, I think we were all searching for hope and optimism when we were writing this music.”
Bentley is an Arizona-born, arena-headlining performer and songwriter. He will be touring country music festivals and stadiums in 2018 in support of his upcoming album The Mountain. The singer will be performing for the Trip Around the Sun tour at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA on Aug. 24-25, along with country superstar Kenny Chesney, Brothers Osborne, and Brandon Lay. Tickets for the Gillette Stadium performance are available on AXS.
