On Feb. 15, EDM super producer Diplo released a new music video for “Look Back,” a collaboration with hip-hop star D.R.A.M. The track is something of a departure for both artists. Its instrumentals are sparse and understated, two qualities that don’t apply to much of the Los Angeles-based hitmakers work. And its lyrics are both downbeat and introspective, two attributes not found in the Hampton, Va. hailing rapper’s typical output.
The song’s music video, directed by Brandon Dermer, captures the track’s somber tone perfectly. It follows a sharply dressed D.R.A.M. as he wanders through a vast and empty desert. Although the video features little in the way of incident or variation, it is nevertheless a beautifully filmed short that gives the man born Shelley Massenburg the chance to connect with the viewer in a quietly profound way.
“Look Back” is Diplo's second major release of the year. In early January, the artist born Thomas Pentz released “Get It Right,” a collaboration with Danish singer-songwriter MØ. The song represents D.R.A.M.’s first new work of 2018 and follows on the heels of his collaboration with Neil Young for the soundtrack of the film “Bright.”
