Ed Sheeran ended his massively successful year in music for 2017 by setting a new chart record in his native UK. Per Official Charts Company, Sheeran’s Grammy-nominated third studio album, ÷ (Divide), returned to the summit of the UK Albums Chart, logging nineteen non-consecutive weeks at the top of the chart and seven peaks in the No. 1 spot, which sets a record for the most times a male solo album has hit No. 1 on the chart. The “Shape of You” singer bested fellow UK artist Sam Smith’s 2015 record, with six total No. 1 stints for In The Lonely Hour.
Sheeran’s most recent Divide single, “Perfect” is also at the top of the UK Singles Chart for the fourth week in a row, following his “dream come true” achievement of snagging the coveted UK Christmas No. 1 single with the romantic track. Sam Smith’s new album, The Thrill Of It All, follows at No. 2 while Eminem’s highly-anticipated new album Revival lands the No. 3 spot.
Overall, the “Castle on the Hill” singer-songwriter has had an incredible run with his critically-acclaimed third studio album. It’s lead single “Shape of You,” busted Spotify streaming records by garnering over 1.4 billion plays, as the most streamed track of all time. Sheeran was also named the most streamed artist on Spotify in 2017. He treated fans to two amazing duet versions of “Perfect” heading into the 2017 holiday season. The first chart-topping duet featured Beyonce and the second featured he and world-renowned vocalist Andrea Bocelli singing portions of the song in Italian.
