The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards are set to air on Aug. 27 from The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. The event is hosted by none other than Katy Perry marking a first for the popstar as she's also nominated and will take the stage herself. On Aug. 7, MTV announced its first batch of performers and others will be announced in the coming weeks before the network's big night.
It would not be a night to celebrate the music over the last year without Ed Sheeran, whose single "Shape of You" spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. Along with Sheeran, Miley Cyrus is slated to perform as well as the world awaits her next studio album featuring lead single "Malibu." Cyrus previously hosted in 2015 and following the broadcast, she released the side project Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, a free download via her website.
New Zealander Lorde is also one of the initial performers for the VMAs as she recently released her sophomore effort Melodrama which debuted at No. 1. The album was supported by lead single "Green Light" followed by "Perfect Places," a track that received a video treatment released on Aug. 3. Lorde has been promoting the album via festivals and will now take it to a wider audience via MTV.
R&B superstar The Weeknd is spending another year as part of the MTV lineup following the success he's had with his 2016 album Starboy which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. Lead single "Starboy" reached the top of the Hot 100 and follow-up "I Feel It Coming" still receives favorable radio airplay since peaking in the top 5.
Hosted by Katy Perry, the singer-songwriter will also perform after releasing fifth album Witness earlier in the year. Perry is up for five nominations, tying with The Weeknd for the evening. Her latest single "Save As Draft" is making its way up the charts now.
Stay tuned for added artists.
