Ed Sheeran’s Divide has gone 4X Platinum. British Phonographic IndustryAward stats showed that the critically-acclaimed album has earned one Platinum every week since its release. Each Platinum cert represents 300,000 units of sales. Multiply that by four and that means the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter’s third studio album has moved more than 1.2 million copies since it dropped on March 3.  Pretty cool, huh?

Sheeran retweeted BPI’s big announcement while also expressing his gratitude. His caption reads: “thank you! amazing x.”

BPI co-owns the Official Charts Company, organizes the BRIT Awards show, and has presented Platinum, Gold, and Silver Awards to UK music artists for 44 years. Ed Sheeran joins a long list of his UK music peers who have been recognized by the prestigious music industry organization. Sheeran’s pal and mentor Sir Elton John, for instance, earned a huge distinction by snagging BPI’s Highest-Certified Single honor with his moving tribute to Princess Diana, “Candle in the Wind 1997,” which has achieved 9X Platinum status to date.

Divide has crushed charts around the globe. It went 2X Platinum in its first week, clocking over 600,000 units of sales. It continues to lead the UK Albums Chart this week, edging out Take That’s Wonderland at No. 2 and Drake’s More Life coming in at No. 3.

Sheeran’s infectious Divide lead single “Shape of You” has achieved 3X Platinum BPI single certification and rules the US Hot 100 chart for a ninth consecutive week. The album, however, fell out of top position on the Billboard 200 and currently rests at No. 2 behind More Life.
