Ed Sheeran hit another huge musical milestone in his native UK as his chart-busting hit “Shape of You” was named the most streamed song of all time in the UK, per an Official Charts Company report. The track is also reportedly the biggest-selling song of 2017 in the UK to date, having moved a staggering 2.6 million copies (across all formats).
Of those total sales, 72 percent are streaming equivalent sales which equal 184 million plays. Sheeran out-streamed Drake’s “One Dance” to set the new UK record. Setting records and smashing them is nothing new for the charismatic, multi-talented Suffolk native. He’s dominated the global music landscape since “Shape” and “Castle on the Hill” dropped simultaneously back in January, just a few months ahead of his critically-acclaimed third studio album Divide’s release.
Coincidentally, “Castle on the Hill” made the cut as the second biggest UK song of the year to date, with 1.5 million equivalent units sold. His playful Irish jig “Galway Girl” comes in at fourth place moving a little over 1 million units and his musical love letter to his sweetheart Cherry Seaborn, “Perfect” hit inside the Top 40 at No. 29.
The Grammy-winning ginger-haired singer has also broken multiple records in Australia, including playing the most stadiums in an Australasian tour with his Divide World Tour. The charismatic superstar seems to have the Midas touch for generating sales. But, his romantic, relatable songs also melt millions of hearts around the world.
