EVO 2018 Word Finals heading to Mandalay Bay, game lineup announced

Fighting games fans from around the world crowded around their laptops and smartphones for one of the year's biggest announcements. Yesterday, the lineup for EVO 2018 was revealed, and players can't wait to show off their skills in front of the world.

As expected, Street Fighter V would be a part of Evo 2018 with the Arcade Edition being the main focus this year. Released last month, the updated version of the hit fighting game includes returning characters Sakura, Blanka, Cody, and Sagat and introduces new characters G and Falke. This version also includes new moves and V-triggers for the entire roster.

Surprising no one, Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Melee will return for some more Nintendo action. Originally released back in 2001, Melee saw a resurgence in the tournament scene in 2013 when it returned to Evo after six years. Super Smash Bros. 4 has sold around 15 million copies worldwide on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS combined since its 2014 release.

This year's event features two newcomers. BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, which was announced at last year's Evo, is set to be released worldwide on June 5. The game's roster features characters from BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena, Under Night In-Birth and RWBY. Released last month, Dragon Ball FighterZ is the hottest fighting game right now. The game, which had a playable demo at last year's event, sold two million copies worldwide a week after its release. Returning games Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, and Injustice 2 fill up the remaining spots.

One of the biggest surprises for this year's event is the exclusion of Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. Released back in September, many people assumed this would take over the spot Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 held for the past six years. At Evo Japan last month, the game was also nowhere to be found. This was mainly because of the small popularity this game has in the area. There's a good chance it can make its way to the side stage.

Registration for Evo 2018 will begin later this month. The event takes place from Aug. 3 through Aug. 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
