In the video for Father John Misty’s new song “Please Don’t Die” Josh Tillman sings, “I’ll take it easy on the morbid stuff,” just before he sinks through the floor into hell. The stop motion video sees Tillman trading in a trashed room--complete with bottles of booze and overflowing ashtrays-- for a ride down the River Styx with the Grim Reaper, after which we see rotting corpses dancing and playing musical instruments. It’s all very Dante. So much for taking it easy on the morbid stuff.
But the video does have a happy ending. Tillman is literally snatched from his grave by three angels, one of whom bears a striking resemblance to his wife, the photographer Emma Tillman. You can watch the video for “Please Don’t Die” above.
“Please Don’t Die” is off of Tillman’s latest, God’s Favorite Customer, which is out now. FJM is headed out on the road this summer and fall in support of the new album, including a stop at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Click here for tickets to select Father John Misty dates on AXS.
