It's hard to believe that 2005 was ten years ago. Facebook was only a year old. Ugg boots paired with miniskirts were considered the coolest of cool, and the world had yet to read the final Harry Potter book. But 2005 was also a great year for music, with artists of all genres releasing albums that would go on to define their careers. In this day and age, nostalgia is king; so, here is a list of the top five essential pop records that turn 10 years old in 2015.

After winning the first season of American Idol in 2002, Kelly Clarkson released her debut studio album Thankful in 2003. But it was with 2005's Breakaway that she really came in to her own as an artist. The album (which was produced by the legendary Clive Davis) took on a more rock-oriented sound. Tracks like the lead single and radio hit "Since U Been Gone" helped Breakaway sell over six million copies in the US alone.

At the turn of the 21st century, everyone's favorite boy band, the Backstreet Boys, became international superstars with the release of Millenium (1999) and Black & Blue (2000). But things went quiet in 2001, when the group went on hiatus following the Black & Blue Tour. Two years later they regrouped, and released their comeback album Never Gone in 2005. Critical reactions to the album leaned negative, but it did sell over a quarter of a million copies in its first week alone and went on to become certified as platinum in the US.

Though the band itself is virtual, the success that Gorillaz saw with their 2005 sophomore effort Demon Days was all real. With a sound that's hip-hop meets pop and rock, it received generally favorable attention from critics and debuted at Number 1 in the UK and Number 6 in the US. Demon Days' lead single "Feel Good Inc." became the band's most successful song, reaching Number 1 on the US Billboard Alternative Songs chart.
