Frank Sinatra TV shows with Elvis, others to be reissued

Vintage episodes of Frank Sinatra's TV specials sponsored by the Timex Watch Company that feature Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and others are being released as the next in the series of “The Sinatra Collection” to hit the streets May 19, Eagle Rock Entertainment announced March 6.

The Timex Shows Vol. 1 and The Timex Shows Vol. 2 together feature four of the TV specials, which ran on ABC-TV from October, 19, 1959 to May 12, 1960 at a time when Sinatra's career was at a low point. “Volume 1” features the first of the four specials sponsored by the watch company. It has Sinatra singing and interacting with Rat Pack member Dean Martin, Mitzi Gaynor and Bing Crosby, also Jimmy Durante, who makes a cameo appearance. The second show on Volume 1, from Dec. 13, 1959, is titled “An Afternoon With Frank Sinatra.” The guests are another Rat Packer, Peter Lawford, plus Hermione Gingold, The Hi-Lo's, Red Norvo and his combo, Juliet Prowse and Ella Fitzgerald, who sings a duet of “Can't We Be Friends” with Sinatra.

“Volume 2” has his final two Timex shows. The first, which aired on ABC on Feb. 15, 1960, is titled “To the Ladies” and features Mary Costa (notably the voice of Sleeping Beauty in the Walt Disney animated film), Barbara Heller, Lena Horne, Juliet Prowse and special guest Eleanor Roosevelt. It's the second, however, that's the most notable. It's “Welcome Home Elvis” which aired on May 12, 1960, and it was Presley's first appearance after being discharged from the Army. Guests included a young Nancy Sinatra, who swoons over Presley, along with Rat Pack members Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop.

The highlight in the program features a wonderful song medley by Sinatra and Presley that has each doing the other's songs. Presley sings “Witchcraft,” while Sinatra sings “Love Me Tender.” Sinatra often professed a dislike of rock 'n' roll, but the medley is surprisingly good on both sides with Sinatra handling “Love Me Tender” like a torch song and Elvis giving a little rock touch to “Witchcraft” similar to the way he did “It's Now or Never.”
