When thinking of great Mardi Gras cities, Detroit is not one that usually comes to mind.
The Motor City, however, is a great place to party, and there will be bars and events geared to one of America’s great party holidays. For those with kids in tow, there will be Mardi Gras events for the family as well, and here are the best to choose from.
Family Donut Shop
11300 Conant St., Hamtramck, MI 48212
While other cities may take a page from the Crescent City in how to celebrate Mardi Gras, Metro Detroit put its own spin on the festivities. If you’re looking for something to do with the whole family, celebrate what’s known locally as “Paczki Day” at the Family Donut Shop, a suburban Detroit institution that has some of the best donuts in the Midwest. Take in one of these bad boys before embarking on the "Paczki Run."
400 Monroe St., Detroit, MI 48226
Greektown is one of Detroit’s best neighborhoods, and while many adults will come down here to party at the area’s bars, you can take the family to Fishbones and celebrate Mardi Gras, Detroit style. Fishbones is known in Detroit for its great seafood, steaks, and sushi, all of which will appeal to the family’s appetite. If you can’t make it to Greektown for Fishbones, the restaurant has two other locations in Southfield (29244 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI 48034, (248) 351-2925) and St. Clair Shores (23722 Jefferson St., St. Clair Shores, MI 48080, (586) 498-3000).
