The week of Thanksgiving will be a festive time for gatherings with family and friends in Boston. There will be several terrific family-friendly events in Boston, so plan to get out to join the fun in 2017.

Thanksgiving Movie Special “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”

Take the family to see the outdoor movie on the Saturday before Thanksgiving to get everyone in the holiday mood. “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” is the hilarious classic movie about a businessman (Steve Martin) traveling home for Thanksgiving, only to be burdened with mishaps and an annoying traveling salesman (John Candy).

Christopher Columbus Park Annual Trellis Lighting Ceremony

The 260’ trellis at Christopher Columbus Park will be illuminated and the park will be festively decorated with Christmas trees. Join the festivities as they ‘flip the switch’ and light up the trellis. The park will be a winter wonderland throughout the holiday season, so take the family for a stroll to enjoy the holiday lights and decorations. This festive event will be hosted by Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the Friends of Christopher Columbus Park, and the Boston Parks and Recreation Dept.

32nd Annual Boston Tuba Christmas

The Boston Tuba Christmas will take place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This celebration of holiday music will include 150 to 200 tuba players serenading the crowd wat the West End of the Marketplace. The Boston Tuba Christmas concert will be presented by the Harvey Phillips Foundation. Admission will be free.

Greater Ashmont Pop Up Holiday Market
Nov. 25 @ 3 p.m.
Peabody Square, 1900 Dorchester Ave., Boston, MA

The third annual pop up market will be presented by Greater Ashmont Main Street and Small Business Saturday to bring a variety of local vendors and holiday festivities. This will be a great place to shop for unique gift items, winter clothing, holiday decorations, pastries, and more. Dot Art will offer arts and crafts activities for kids, so they will have fun while you enjoy the market. The market will lead into the Annual Peabody Square Holiday Tree Lighting, which will be part of the Mayor’s Holiday Trolley Tour.

Take the family to enjoy shopping at local businesses and the 33rd tree lighting ceremony in Roslindale. The event will include music, Santa Claus, ornament making, and more.

Faneuil Hall Holiday Spectacular

A preview of the new Holiday Blink! Will be broadcast on WBZ-TV, hosted by new anchors Lisa Hughes and David Wade. The festive show will feature entertainment and the New England Patriots Holiday Toy Drive.

All-New BLINK! Light & Sound Show

The Faneuil Hall Marketplace will be illuminated with the holiday show for five weeks. The Marketplace will continue the tradition of presenting the largest tree in the Northeast as the centerpiece of their holiday decorations. The show of holiday lights and music will be enhanced with more lights, more music, and more fun for the family.  Admission will be free.

2017 Frog Pond Skating Spectacular and Tree Lighting hosted by Scott Hamilton

The Skating Club of Boston will present a free figure skating show at The Boston Common Frog Pond. Watch the show featuring national and international competitive figure skaters. The club will be honoring Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton, who will host the event. The event will help raise awareness for the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation, which supports cancer research.

Winter Ice Skating at Frog Pond

Take the family to enjoy fresh air and exhilarated exercise while ice skating at Frog Pond. Admission will be based on the skater’s height. People 58 inches tall or more will be charged $6, while people shorter than 58 inches tall will be able to skate for free. Bring your own skates or rent skates at Frog Pond.

ZooLights at Stone Zoo
Nov. 24-Dec. 31 (closed Dec. 25) @ 5 p.m.

The entire family will enjoy the sparkling lights and decorations at Stone Zoo. Stroll through the zoo and see the animals, including black bears Smoky and Bubba, reindeer, artic foxes, Canada lynx, and bald eagles. Santa will be at Santa’s Castle through Dec. 23. A visit to the zoo will be fun and educational for children and adults. Tickets will be $7-$10, and free for children under 2.

Winter Reimagined 2017

Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Dr., Boyston, MA 01505

Tower Hill Botanic Gardens will be beautifully decorated with lights and ornaments throughout the acres of formal gardens and trails. Daytime and nighttime admission varies so check the website for admission information. Admission prices are slightly lower on Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings. Children age 5 and under will be admitted free.
