The week of Thanksgiving is traditionally a time for homecomings, family, and friends in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas. There will be several festival free special events kicking off the festive holiday season around Thanksgiving time. Check out the fun-filled holiday events that will delight children and adults in 2017.

Christmas Tree Lighting on Sundance Square
Nov. 18 @ 5 p.m.
Sundance Square Plaza — 420 Main St., Fort Worth, TX 76102

Sundance Square will be festive for the lighting of the 65’-foot tall Christmas Tree, which will be at 6:30 p.m., following a performance by the Inspiration Band.

XTO Energy Parade of Lights
Nov. 19 @ 6 p.m.
Fort Worth, TX 76102

The festive holiday parade will be themed “the Melodies of Christmas!,” so it will be a musical event on the streets of Fort Worth. The parade will step off at the corner of Belknap and Throckmorton at 6 p.m. Plan to arrive early to claim a good seat on the parade route and get some refreshments or visit the shops at Sundance Square. There will be more than 100 illuminated entries in the parade, which will be a colorful event to be enjoyed by kids and adults.

Carol of Lights in Grapevine

Historic Downtown Grapevine — Town Square Gazebo, Grapevine, TX 76051

The “Christmas Capital of Texas” will be illuminated with lights for the holiday season. The Tree Lighting events will include family-friendly activities, live music, fireworks, and merriment as the Mayor flips the switch to illuminate the Christmas tree. Bring your camera to have a photo taken with a turn-of-the-century sleigh pulled by a live reindeer.

Live Reindeer Park and Festival

The holidays will be kicked off in grand style with Santa Claus, his famous reindeer Rudolph, and more. Santa will arrive at the annual Salvation Army Angel Tree Celebration and will then head outside to the CenterPark Garden for Reindeer Park. Black Friday at NorthPark will include activities and entertainment for children and adults, including holiday characters, crafts, games, treats, DJ holiday music, and a performance by Dallas Summer Musicals.

Santa Arrives at Stockyards Station

Santa Claus will be on his magical stagecoach, accompanied to Stockyards Station by a cattle drive. Family-friendly activities will include photos with Santa, caroling, and face painting. The Legend of Texas gunfight show will reenact some of the historic past of Fort Worth at 4:15 p.m.

Home for the Holidays

Downtown McKinney Main Street — 111 N. Tennessee St., McKinney, TX 75069

Thanksgiving weekend will be especially festive in McKinney, where they will mark the 37th hometown Christmas celebration. McKinney’s 165-year-old commercial historic downtown district will block off a 14-block area for this family-friendly festival. The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be on the MPAC Lawn on Nov. 24 15 6:15 p.m. Home for the Holidays will include live Christmas music, dancing, costumed characters, children’s activities, visits with Santa, children’s arts and crafts, a petting zoo, and more. The festival admission will be free.

Town of Westlake Annual Tree Lighting

The hometown holiday celebration will be in a new location, The Plaza in Solana. Join the holiday celebration with family and friends to boost your holiday spirit. The activities will include carriage rides, reindeer petting zoo, cake-walk, cookie decorating, musical performances, photos with Santa, and special visitors from the North Pole. K-LUV live radio will broadcast from the event.

Dallas Holiday Parade

The Dallas Holiday Parade will be a huge event, as it has regularly drawn crowds of more than 450,000 spectators.  The holiday tradition will kick off the holiday season and delight children and adults, with festive floats, Santa and Mrs. Claus, costumed characters, and more.

The Christmas in the Stockyards will be hosted by the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. This will be a family-friendly holiday celebration centered on western heritage. Kids and adults will enjoy the children’s choirs, roaming carolers, photos with Santa, face painting, the coloring station and more.
