British pop rock heartthrob Harry Styles has achieved a rare career milestone in becoming the first music artist to ever have a debut single (“Sign of the Times”), album (Harry Styles) and film (“Dunkirk”) open at No. 1. That’s an impressive feat for the internationally-revered former boy bander who recently took two huge creative turns; first, by releasing his first solo record as an art rock collection and second, making his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s epic WWII drama. Given the popularity of both projects, he’s definitely pulled it off.
“Sign of the Times” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks and on the UK Singles Chart. His album debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and Billboard 200, among other places. Now, his debut feature film project premiered at the top of the box office. Per Box Office Mojo, “Dunkirk” became the first non-franchise film to top the weekend box office upon opening this summer. It raked in over $50 million at first position in 3,720 locations. The film managed to hold onto the top spot for a second week in row and has grossed a whopping $234 million globally.
At this point, Harry Styles seems to have the Midas Touch. All his creative endeavors are turning to gold. Film reviews of Harry’s Dunkirk role have been largely positive. Rolling Stone (upon which Styles graced the cover earlier this year) said he played his role “with subtle grace and zero pop-star showboating.”
The “Carolina” singer seems humble in the face of his solo superstardom. He’s repeatedly expressed his gratitude to his fans for embracing his first solo album and his film debut. On July 23, two days after “Dunkirk’s” worldwide release he tweeted “thank you” seven times, followed by “Love you. H”
In case fans are wondering if Harry Styles is going to trade in his microphone for a full-time acting career, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon. His first round of live shows booked in intimate venues sold out in less than a minute. He added a full stadium tour that will keep him performing in front of thousands of screaming fans well into 2018.
