Of all the American teams in the National Hockey League, the Boston Bruins have the longest history. On Nov. 1, 1924, they were the first team from the United States to join the NHL. Four years later in 1929, the Bruins would win their first of six Stanley Cups. The others came in 1939, 1941, 1970, 1972 and 2011.
Twice during the 1970's, the Bruins and Kings faced off against each other in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the 1976 quarterfinals, the Bruins beat the Kings four games to three in a tight seven game series. The Kings won two of their games in overtime. Butch Goring came up huge in the series as he scored both of the Kings overtime winners. The first came in game two at the Boston Garden and the second came in game six at the Forum.
The following season in 1977, the Bruins beat the Kings again four games to two in the quarterfinals. The Kings lost the series despite scoring 24 goals during an exciting six games. Both of the Bruins teams that played the Kings in 1976 and 1977 were coached by Don Cherry, who would later become an iconic hockey broadcaster.
