The Kings and St. Louis Blues entered the National Hockey League on the same date--June 5, 1967. For their first seven seasons, the Kings and Blues were each part of the NHL's West Division. Despite reaching the Stanley Cup Final in their first three years of existence from 1968 to 1970, the Blues have not been to the Stanley Cup Finals since and have never won the Stanley Cup. Like the Blues, the Kings have also reached the Stanley Cup Finals thrice, but have two titles in 2012 and 2014.
Four times the Blues and Kings have met each other in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with each team winning two playoff series. The Kings swept the Blues four games to none in the 2012 Western Conference semi-finals en route to their Stanley Cup run, and then beat the Blues in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs four games to two in the Western Conference quarterfinals.
The Blues and Kings will be forever linked to the 1996 deal that saw Wayne Gretzky be traded from the Kings to St. Louis. On Feb. 27, 1996, Gretzky was traded for Craig Johnson, Patrice Tardif, Roman Vopat, the Blues fifth-round draft pick in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft and the first round draft pick in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
