The Kings and Canucks were first divisional foes in 1981-82 season when the Kings moved from the Norris Division to the Smythe Division. Five times the teams have battled each other in the Stanley Cup playoffs, with the Kings winning on three occasions--in 1991, 1993 and 2012. In 1991, the Kings beat the Canucks four games to two in the Smythe Division semi-finals. In game two of the series, Wayne Gretzky scored a key overtime goal in a 3-2 Kings win, which tied the series at one at the time. In 1993, the Kings beat the Canucks four games to two in the Smythe Division Final. Gary Shuchuk scored a big goal for the Kings in double overtime in game six of the series, a 4-3 Kings win.
Then in 2012, the Kings entered the Stanley Cup playoffs as the number eight seed in the Western Conference. However they had no problems eliminating the top seeded Canucks as they won the series four games to one. Jarret Stoll scored the game winning goal of the series at 4:27 of overtime in game five. The Kings would go on to eliminate the higher ranked St. Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes and New Jersey Devils en route to their first Stanley Cup win in franchise history.
