Imagine Dragons and REO Speedwagon are the latest acts to get the "Mash-Up Supergroup" treatment on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," as the two rock bands will come together to form "Imagine REO Speedragons" on Monday's edition of the ABC late night talk show.
The "Shots" hitmakers and the "Keep On Loving You" rockers are set to collaborate according to a press release issued Friday by ABC, which did not reveal any specific performance information other than that there would be a "secret hit track" included.
There's a more than a 40 year difference between the bands, with REO Speedwagon having been formed in 1967 and Imagine Dragons starting in 2008. Given the result, the former's resume is much longer; Speedwagon have 16 studio albums to their credit, while Imagine Dragons recently released their sophomore record, Smoke + Mirrors.
But the latter prevails in the awards department. Speedwagon was nominated for a Grammy Award in the now discontinued Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal category in 1982 for their album Hi Infidelity, but lost to The Police. Imagine Dragons won the Grammy in the replacement category, Best Rock Performance, last year for their song, "Radioactive."
Mostly, the pairing makes sense because the combination of their names is hilarious. And for their part, members of both acts are equally enthused about this unlikely combination, with the release quoting Imagine Dragons front man Dan Reynolds as saying it "was destined to happen since the day Zeus thrust his mighty bolt to the earth."
Monday's performance will be the latest in the series of "Mash-Up Supergroup" events that "Jimmy Kimmel Live" has rolled out over the last three months, which focuses on creating pun-worthy combinations of unlikely acts for one night only performances. Past outings have seen Weezer come together with ZZ Top to form "Wee-Z Top," jazz artist Kenny G sharing the stage with Warren G, Morris Day merging with The HAIM, and Blackstreet partnering with Aloe Blacc to become "Aloe Blaccstreet."
But by creating "Imagine REO Speedragons," the "Kimmel" crew might just have outdone themselves. Imagine Dragons are known for their sense of humor, having once let the cast of TruTV's "Impractical Jokers" use one of their concerts to film a double punishment, so one imagines they'll certainly have fun with this hilarious happening.
The band is currently in the middle of a nationwide tour in support of Smoke + Mirrors, with their next stop coming May 29 in Napa Valley, California. You can view their entire schedule here.
"Jimmy Kimmel Live" airs Monday, May 4, at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
