After releasing his third studio album, Boarding House Reach, in March, Jack White recently found himself back in the studio to record--of all things--a Spotify single. While it seems a bit uncharacteristic for the pharaoh of the phonograph to press a single to anything but wax, White did pick a cover song you might dig out of a crate at your local record store to go along with his own single “Over and Over and Over” for the live Spotify session.
The Modern Lovers were a highly influential protopunk band led by singer-songwriter Jonathan Richman. White chose to cover Richman’s “Pablo Picasso” from The Modern Lovers’ 1976 eponymous debut (David Bowie also covered the song on his 2003 album Reality).
