Janelle Monae released two new music videos from her forthcoming album Dirty Computer and if these songs are any indication, this album is going to be fire.
"Make Me Feel" showcases Monae at her funky-best. Heavily influenced by Prince (an artist she collaborated with on her album The Electric Lady), one wonders if he helped co-write the song before he passed. With odes to David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust/Thin White Duke phase and Prince's "Kiss" music video, Monae explores her bisexuality with lyrics including "It's like I'm powerful with a little bit of tender, An emotional, sexual bender" while trying to choose between the female she went to the club with and the guy she ran into there. All this is taking place on highly stylized sets (the set productions and costume designs for both videos are out of this world) that remind you of a time when people treated music videos as an art form.
"Django Jane" finds Monae spitting in the style of MC Lyte predicting she'll be a future EGOT (someone who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). With the lines "Box office numbers, and they doin' outstandin', Runnin' outta space in my damn bandwagon, Remember when they used to say I look to mannish, Black girl magic, y'all can't stand it," Monae capably puts haters and hanger-ons in their place, reminding people that her absence from music was due to her roles in the movies "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight" and empowers black women all within half a verse. A lot of lyricists can barely get their point across in an entire song.
Dirty Computer will be released via Bad Boy Records on April 27.
