Janet Jackson has been announced to be the recipient of this year’s Icon Award at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards when the annual show takes place at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 20. The announcement came directly through the organization’s editorial arm on Monday morning, which also included the news that the 51-year-old recording artist and pop star will indeed be performing at this year’s event when it airs live on NBC.
As the report details, the upcoming appearance at the BBMAs on May 20 will be Jackson’s first televised performance nearly a decade. Throughout her career, Jackson has found her name on Billboard’s charts and magazine, including the fact that she still holds the record for 18 consecutive songs breaking through the top 10 on the “Hot 100” singles chart. Jackson is also the only artist in Billboard’s history to release three different albums - Control, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, and janet - with each containing a minimum of five top 10 hits on the “Hot 100” chart, the Fader reports.
Jackson released her first studio album since 2008 in 2015 with Unbreakable. Her world tour in support of the album was postponed on multiple occasions due to surgery and the pregnancy with her first child in 2016. The shows were ultimately rescheduled to take place this past fall and winter, and she also recently announced the continuation of the tour well into the upcoming summer months, which also includes headlining appearances at New York’s Panorama Music Festival and San Francisco’s Outside Lands.
The 2018 running of the Billboard Music Awards will feature additional performances by Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Dua Lipa, BTS and more. Tickets to see the star-studded event in person come May 20 are on sale now, and can be purchased by clicking here.
