There seems to be a never-ending output of Jimi Hendrix re-issues, and here comes another one to add to the list: On Nov. 9, Experience Hendrix and Sony Music's Legacy Recordings are releasing a deluxe box set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jimi Hendrix Experience's Electric Ladyland album. The box set will be available as a 3-CD/Blu-ray set or a 6-LP/Blu-ray set that has the following albums: a newly remastered Electric Ladyland, remixed in 5.1 surround sound by longtime Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer; Electric Ladyland: The Early Takes, which has demos and studio outtakes; and the previously unreleased live album Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live at the Hollywood Bowl 9/14/68. The Blu-ray is the documentary "At Last …The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland."
Electric Ladyland was not only the Jimi Hendrix Experience's third album, but it was also the first album produced by Hendrix and the last studio album he recorded before his untimely death in 1970. Among the album's best-known songs are "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "Crosstown Traffic" and Hendrix's remake of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," which became Hendrix's biggest hit single, reaching No. 20 in the U.S. and No. 5 in the U.K. The Electric Ladyland album features guest musicians such as Traffic members Steve Winwood, Dave Mason and Chris Wood; Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady; and drummer Buddy Miles, who would later become a member of Hendrix's Band of Gypsys after the Jimi Hendrix Experience broke up.
Electric Ladyland: The Early Takes has previously unreleased versions of “Angel Caterina” and “Little Miss Strange,” which feature guest appearances from Buddy Miles and Stephen Stills. “Long Hot Summer” features Hendrix and drummer Mitch Mitchell with Al Kooper on piano, as well as “At Last ... The Beginning,” which was an early version of what would become “…And the Gods Made Love.” The demos include early versions of “Voodoo Child,” “Gypsy Eyes," “Angel” and “My Friend."
The deluxe box set's cover will be the Linda Eastman photo that Hendrix originally wanted as the album cover: a photo of the band posing with children at the statue of Alice In Wonderland in New York’s Central Park. The photo was used on the album’s inside gatefold for the original U.S. release of Electric Ladyland, and not used at all for the album's original U.K. release. Eastman, who would later marry Paul McCartney, took photos of many iconic rock stars of the 1960s and 1970s.
The box set also has a 48-page booklet with Hendrick's handwritten lyrics, poem and instructions to his record label, as well as previously unpublished photos taken by Kramer at the recording sessions.
The Electric Ladyland deluxe box set is the second Hendrix release this year. Both Sides of the Sky , a compilation of previously unreleased and rare material, was released in March. In August, Hendrix Experience and Sony Music announced a licensing deal to make of Hendrix's music available through "every type of media." In other words, expect more Hendrix reissues to be released for years to come.
