Jimmy Buffett teaming up with Huey Lewis for special show at MGM Grand Garden Arena

Every once in while, Jimmy Buffett will emerge from his spot in paradise to give the fans a taste of what he lives on a daily basis.

That will be the case once more when he’ll bring his Cheeseburgers and Coral Reefer Band from paradise to Sin City for a special concert with another legendary act, Huey Lewis & The News. The two will be at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Oct. 20, and if some think that this is a concert for the nostalgic, that sentiment could be further from the truth.

In today’s musical landscape, you’ll be able to hear a lot of what Jimmy Buffett and Huey Lewis brought to the table in their heyday. In Buffett’s case, his story is already well-known among music listeners, but for those who don’t know of his, nor Lewis’, history, here’s some context.

Buffett is one of music’s most-loved treasures, beginning his career in the late-’60s in Nashville, releasing his first album, Down to Earth, at the dawn of the ‘70s. That album, along with his move to Key West, FL in 1971, would form the basis for his sound, which he branded “gulf and western,” in which he described as “island escapism.”

He formed the Coral Reefer Band (a combination of coral reefs and “reefer,” slang for marijuana) in 1974 and has been jamming with them ever since. He’s well known for the single “Margaritaville,” which is now immortalized as a popular restaurant and bar chain.

While Buffett had his prime in the ‘70s, Huey Lewis and the News would enjoy their greatest period of hits in the ‘80s. Songs like “I Want a New Drug,” the anthemic “The Heart of Rock & Roll,” and the electro-rock of “The Power of Love,” the title single of the “Back to the Future” soundtrack, made them pop icons in a decade filled with them.

With the two joining forces in Vegas in October, this concert is guaranteed to be rock n’ roll good time in paradise that many in attendance will not soon forget. As long as someone remembers to bring the cheeseburgers.
